Hey, Wait…
Creator: Jason
Publisher: Fantagraphics
Pages: 64
Starts out as a story between two childhood friends with each page being a new snippet of interactions from their everyday life. This however takes a darker turn in the second half, after a tragic turn of events where the story goes on to follow one of these boys through his adult life, with a shitty job, suffering from alcoholism and otherwise living a pretty lonely existence.
The story works very well despite the format being very minimalistic and would not seem to work in telling this kind of story, but surprisingly Jason makes it all come together. It uses the mediums strengths to its advantage and excels in telling the reader a whole lot without ever pointing it out to them. both through dialog and visuals.
Its is a very interesting and unique way of doing storytelling this kind of emotional storytelling. The first part felt like jumping around between seemingly random moments but then, bit by bit, i realized how they all added up in building the characters and the overarcing story. It all seems very random when starting out, but by the end of it, you remember all those different snippets and realize why they had to be in there, even though they seemed to have no connection to anything important at first.
This book has been on my mind for a long time after i read it, and clearly resonated with me, so even though it is an easy read, and it looks simple it can still hit some deep feelings.
Pros:
- Heartfelt story
- Show don’t tell
- Stylized simplistic design
Cons:
- Very short
- Seems pretty random
