An evil witch named Hester Beck once lived in Harrow County and was burned by the villagers for her witchcraft. On her dying breath she swore that they would never get rid of her and that she would return some day.
The book follows a young girl named Emmy living in Harrow County on a farm right where the old witch was burned to death decades ago. She does not know anything about the witch, but her father and the other old people of the county, fear that she might have already returned.
The watercolor art is really pretty and gives the book a distinguishable style that works very well with the overall creepy tone of the story. I also really like how the charaters are drawn, which is something that is also talked about in the sketches shown in the back of the book. A character like Emmy needs to look like an innocent girl but still be able to express a lot more than that.
Characterization is really good and that helps to ground the place in reality, maybe even a bit too much, as for someone like myself who is not from the southern parts of USA, it can be quite distraction and hard to read in a good pace when every other word is spelled like it is said on those parts.
Even though the ending felt a bit anti-climactic there was still a lot of unexplained things that made me want to continue to read the next books in the series to see what this world has to offer. The series seem to have grat potential to expand the story and explore the different chracters that inhibit it.
Pros:
- Genuinely creepy.
- Character writing.
- Artstyle.
Cons:
- Anti-climactic.
- Distracting rural language.
