I read a Danish translation of the book, and the pictures are from that version.
Follow the life of a Brazilian man named Bras, seeing some of the most important moments in his life and how they could have gone wrong and ended it all, because in those moments where his life ends, you truly see the life he had.
Daytripper demands a lot of attention from the reader, and makes you figure out some of the underlying story yourself. Not for a sleepy night. If you do not focus, you are going to miss out and that would be a shame, because this book has a lot to offer. Read this when you have the time and energy to immerse yourself and enjoy it at your own pace.
Almost everybody can relate to this story in some way or another because we have all experienced some aspects of what Bras goes through in his life, Even though you might not think you have that much in common with a man from Brazil, but everybody has their happy or sad moments and we are all going to die someday. You have probably thought about death too.
Daytripper really shows the strength of comics versus other media, fx in the interplay between text and visuals which it uses to great effect. Of course, to pull this off the creators show that they know, and have a deep understanding of, how to write a great story, make a good panel layout, and all the more technical details that go into making a comic book good to read.
Often when I read a good story and it comes to an end, I want more of it. This book though, feels so complete and finished, that I felt it had just the right amount of content, so that I was fully satisfied by the end of it, without dragging the story out too much. I cared for the character and what life he might end up living, and that is a pretty impressive feat in itself.
This is one of those books you will keep thinking about for a long time after you have put it down.
Pros:
- Very emotional and touching story.
- Great page and panel layouts.
- Feels unique and original.
Cons:
- Not for a sleepy night..
